Geoffrey Chaucers The Canterbury Tales - Free Essay Example

Geoffrey Chaucers The Canterbury Tales is a collection of stories written in Middle English in the late fourteenth century. This collection of works, filled with satire, is presented to the reader as a frame narrative, a literary technique that involves placing a story within a story. In The Canterbury Tales, Chaucers outer frame is a group of thirty people, including Chaucer the Pilgrim, who make a pilgrimage to Saint Thomas Beckets shrine in Canterbury. The pilgrims on this journey are a diverse group coming from every socio-economic class of English society, excluding only royalty and serfs. Before embarking on their journey, the pilgrims meet at the Tabard Inn in Southwark, a town outside London. As the pilgrims gather at this tavern, Chaucer introduces the inner frame of the story, the tales themselves. Harry Bailly, the Host of the pilgrims, proposes a contest, in which each pilgrim must tell two tales in each direction of the journey. Bailly proposes this contest as a source of entertainment as traveling in silence ill create boredom among the pilgrims. The prize of a free dinner, courtesy of the losers upon their return home to the Inn, goes to the teller of the most moral and entertaining tale. When writing The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer expected one hundred twenty tales in total, four for each pilgrim. However, only twenty-four were actually written, two of which are fragments. Among the pilgrims, only two females are in the group, one of whom is the Wife of Bath, a clear representation of Chaucers uncanny ability to match the pilgrims tale to its teller. The Wife of Bath is perhaps Chaucers most original, unique, and developed character of all the pilgrims. She is described in the General Prologue as having gap-teeth and large hips (Chaucer 15), which are sexually appealing features and point to her sexual maturity (Rossignol 155). The concluding lines of her portrait in the General Prologue, And knew the remedies of loves mischances, / An art in which she knew the oldest dances (Chaucer 15), also point to her experienced sexuality, ?the old dance being a euphemism for sexual intercourse (Rossignol 155). Chaucer also describes her rosy facial features, noting, Bold was her face, handsome, and red in hue (15). The narrator first pities the Wife of Bath as she is characterized as being somewhat deaf (15). However, she possesses social skills, such as laughing and chatting, and is skilled in wandering. Chaucer takes note of these skills, saying, In company she liked to laugh and chat (15). The Wife of Bath is a widow, albeit A worthy woman from Bath city (15). She is also proficient in weaving and making cloth. Chaucer emphasizes her skills of weaving and cloth making by alluding to the fact that her skills surpass Belgian clothmakers (Rossignol 154). In making cloth she showed so great a bent / She bettered those of Ypres and Ghent (15). As described in the General Prologue, the Wife of Bath wears scarlet red hose and soft, new shoes. Her fondness for ornate garments comes as no surprise as she is a very skilled weaver (Rossignol 155). She wears a ten-pound fabric, referred to as kerchief, to hide the signs of her aging as she attempts to attract a new husband. The Wife of Bath is part of the middle class in English society. In fourteenth century England, middle class women, viewed as inferior to men, were given the purpose of running the home and the family. Women were assigned domestic duties, such as cooking and weaving. As mentioned in the General Prologue, the Wife of Bath is skilled at making cloth. Because the social and political order of feudalism was determined by land ownership, women who bore no children and inherited land after being widowed were considered on par with men in society (Power 38). Power contends, At all stages of her life the woman, considered as a landowner, was a person of importance (38). The Wife of Bath has numerous husbands but no children, so she enjoys each of her husbands possessions, as well as his land. However, if she were widowed young and left childless she must be wooed again (38), thus, society required the Wife of Bath to find a husband once more. With each new marriage, all her possessions and l and, acquired from her previous marriages, became her new husbands. Marriage, an important theme in the role of women in medieval society, is equally prominent in the Wife of Baths Prologue and Tale. The Wife of Baths Prologue is essentially a biography of the Wife of Bath, Alison. The Prologue reveals much about Alisons personality and her obstacles in life, specifically concerning the subject of her many marriages. The Wife of Baths Prologue is the longest of the pilgrims in The Canterbury Tales and the most unique because it is significantly longer than the tale she tells. Critics contend that the sheer length of her Prologue and the fact that she loses her train of thought six times support the reading that Alison experiences considerable discomfort with her speaking situation (Treharne 4). Although her prologue is lengthy and the Wife of Bath goes on many tangents, she uses her prologue to offer insight into the life and marriage of a woman in the early fourteenth century. Within the first few lines of her prologue she announces that experience (Chaucer 258) will be her guide to tell her story rather than authority. Because of her five marriages, the Wife of Bath is confiden t that she is an expert on the matter. Throughout her prologue, the Wife of Bath tells tales of each of her former husbands and reveals how she was able to gain authority in each of her relationships. Her speech about her life quickly evolves into a defense of her many marriages as she claims people criticize her for marrying five different men. Critics contend that the first part of the Wifes Prologue resembles a marriage sermon in its use of Biblical quotations and interpretations to defend marriage (Lipton 4). The Wife of Baths sermon is easily recognized with the Pardoners nervous interruption about his newfound fear of marriage. However, the Wife of Bath is put back on her initial train of thought and dives into her explanation of her strategies of using her body to gain power and financial independence from each of her husbands (Trudeau 2). Of her five husbands, Alison contends that three of them were good and two were bad (Chaucer 263). She admits that the first three were good because they were rich and old (263). Alison tells her story and recalls all torments that she put each of her husbands through. She does not fail to admit to using her sexual and verbal power to make each husband submit to her. She notes in her Prologue, Ill have a husband yet / Who shall be both my debtor and my slave / And bear his tribulation to the grave / Upon his flesh, as long as Im his wife. For mine shall be the power all his life. . . (262). The Wife of Bath plays on a fear that is common to man: a woman controlling their marriage and their body. The Wife of Bath also recounts teasing her husbands and only giving them pleasure for the promise of money. Alison contends, But as I had them eating from my hand / And as theyd yielded me their gold and land, / Why then take trouble to provide them pleasure / Unless to profit and amuse my leisure? (264). The Wife of Bath keeps these three men in a constant state of sexual exhaustion until they die (Brosamer 9). The Wife of Bath describes her fourth husband as a profligate reveler (Brosamer 9) and one who is unfaithful. He takes a mistress which makes Alison very upset, so she retaliates and shouts accusations at him, makes him jealous, and essentially tortures him until the point of his death. She says, . . .frying him in his own grease / Of jealousy and rage; he got no peace (Chaucer 270). She recalls how this marriage was one where she had her beauty and her youth and how in her final and fifth marriage, she marries a man, Jankyn, who is significantly younger than her. The Wife of Baths final marriage goes against her previous reasons for marriage. Alison marries Jankyn for love, not for money: Alison asserts, I gave my whole heart up, for him to hold (274). She is pleased with the sexual element of their marriage, noting how she considers herself a lusty one (274), but is displeased with Jankyns hobby of reading a book that involves evil women. Out of frustration the Wife of Bath tears out pages in this book, thus causing her husband to grow upset and retaliate: he strikes her in the head and causes her deafness. The Wife of Bath seizes an opportunity to take control of this relationship, so she plays dead. Alison uses her manipulative skills to gain power, land, and money by playing on her husbands guilt. She discloses to her audience, And when Id mastered him, and out of deadlock / Secured myself the sovereignty in wedlock. . . (280). The Wife of Bath succeeds once again in her strategies to be the dominant partner in the relationship. The Wife of Baths Prologue is interrupted after she tells the story of her fifth and final husband. The Friar and the Summoner begin to quarrel as they grow impatient with the length of her prologue, thus Alison begins to tell her Tale. To fully understand the Wife of Baths Tale, one must take into account the experiences Alison discusses in her Prologue. Although very long and detailed, the Prologue offers insight about the Wife of Baths personality and the reasons and meanings behind the telling of her tale. Critics note that the Wife of Bath softens her views of charity and love but continues the theme of autonomy and power (Trudeau 3). The Wife of Baths Tale is characterized by scholars as a Breton lais, which is a short, rhymed romance recounting a love story that includes supernatural elements in a land of enchantment (Encyclopedia Britannica 1). Her Tale tells of a knight who rapes a maiden, thus depriving the maiden of power over her own body. Consequently, his punishment, decided by the women of the court, is that he must learn what women desire most in a relationship. The knight knocks on every womans door and asks, What could it be that women want most? (283). Alison suggests that a mans true happiness can be realized when he allows his spouse to have some level of autonomy (Trudeau 3). The answer to a mans happiness is revealed in her Prologue, which is the answer to the question the knight must answer for himself in her Tale. The Wife of Baths Prologue and Tale eludes interpretative truth (Treharne 3) and reveals that a woman can only be happy in a marriage if she has some sort of control over her husband. These views of women having control and authority in marriages is a feminist ideal that resonates loudly in Middle English literature (4) and assists in making the Wife of Bath stand out as one of the most memorable of all female literary characters (4).

Feminism A Feminist Perspective - 1168 Words

Important theorists, eye-opening articles, groundbreaking books, and activism has influenced my intellectual journal through feminist theory. Feminism is a contentious topic with matters that pertain to contemporary feminism, including the following: reproductive rights; equal access to education and employment; marriage equality; violence against women; and the sex trade. While these are only a few of the issues faced by feminists, it is evident that feminism has great value in today’s society. My journey with feminism began in high school when a professor shared negative assumptions associated with my gender and Aboriginal heritage. This alone was motivation for me to pursue women’s studies, specifically on marginalized populations. Throughout my studies, I have come across groundbreaking literature, including: We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie; Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay; and Black Looks by Bell Hooks. One of the first authors that had a big infl uence on me was Naomi Wolf and The Beauty Myth. Wolf argues that women’s bodies are monitored and imprisoned by the myth of beauty. One of my greatest influences was Carla Rice (University of Guelph) who studies equity education, gender and sexual development, and critical psychology. During my Master’s degree, I was a teaching assistant for a Women’s Studies course. How Successful Was Henry Vii in Dealing with Challenges to...

How successful was Henry VII in dealing with challenges to his royal authority in the years 1489 to 1499? Between the years 1489 and 1499, Henry received three main threats to his royal authority: the Yorkshire Rebellion in 1489; the pretender, Perkin Warbeck (from 1491 to 1499); and the Cornish uprising in 1497. All of these threats were quelled successfully; however each one presented problems to Henry and highlighted his instability on the throne. I believe that Henry dealt with the challenges successfully, but his policies suffered as a result. In 1489, the Yorkshire Rebellion arose due to conflict between the Earl of Northumberland and the Commons of Northumberland and Yorkshire, who were reluctant to pay more taxes. The†¦show more content†¦Therefore, although Henry’s swift actions against Warbeck’s invasion successfully dealt with that particular challenge, Stanley’s execution reflects Henry’s paranoia and deep concern. During the years between 1496 and 1497, Warbeck continued to cause Henry trouble – however, Henry became more successful at overcoming these threats. For example, although Warbeck was greeted into Scotland warmly by King James IV, their invasion of England in September 1946 lasted just four days; the English force led by Lord Latimer was too strong. In addition, the northern counties failed to support Warbeck, which is in contrast to his previous international support. At this point, Henry was showing greater confidence against Warbeck. It had seemed as though the marriage of Henrys eldest son, Arthur - to Catherine, a Spanish princess– would be threatened by these anti-Tudor gestures, however the marriage did go ahead in 1501. Despite the failed invasion of England, Henry was still wary of Warbeck’s allegiance with Scotland; he spent the beginning on 1497 raising a huge army to invade Scotland. This dedication – in terms of both time and money – re flects his strength and determination to quell Warbeck once and for all. Unfortunately, 1497 saw the greatest threat to Henry’s authority – the Cornish Rebellion. Described by John Guy as â€Å"the most important revolt in Henry’s reign†, it was sparked by unpopular tax collections (similar to those provoking the Yorkshire

Throughout the Renaissance, many discoveries, improvements, and realizations were made in art and literature. However, these changes did not impact the image of a woman in the Renaissance. Such as the four most important Renaissance artists depictions of women. Those artists were Leonardo, Donated, Raphael, and Michelangelo (yes these are also the popular cartoon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, no they are not prevalent in any way shape or form other than name). In literature, poets such as Christopher Marlowe, Machiavelli, and mainly William Shakespeare discuss holy or spiritual and have mixed opinions of women (Elegance). Advancements made in that timestamp set the stage for the world in future eras to come. In addition this poses an important yet also controversial perception of the Renaissance; this perception is how successful was the Renaissance for women? In the Renaissance, artists opinions had mixed results but changed frequently. Some drew and sculpted women nude to show a sense of hubris whereas others portrayed hem as overweight to show shame but at the same time it could also stand for fertility because producing a child was very important at the time. Another statement made was when the political systems of Europe changed from the medieval feudal systems to a more modern-day government system, women of every social class saw a change in their social and political options that men did not. Celibacy did become the female norm and the relations of the sexes were restructured to one of female dependency and male Pickle 2 domination (Kelly 20). Women lived a more insubordinate or inferior lifestyle. Men led over everything, even through half a century of Queens. This perceives that women were inferior and did achieve in the Renaissance, Just not as much as men. The Renaissance presented people with rich literature that paved the literary cobblestones into the environmentally sound asphalt streets used today. In literature at the time, women were viewed as the inferior gender and had roles in civilization such as; housekeeping, caring for the youth as well as sexual pleasures to men. Womens roles were limited in Renaissance life to a point where they were excluded from a leading role in public life (Women). They were not permitted to act in any of Shakespearean plays. In the event a woman character needed to be filled, a man would suffice as women were incapable. Famed and revered playwright William Shakespeare was noted for the writing of Macbeth, a seventeenth century play dedicated to King James. In this play , Shakespeare writes of Macbeth and his Jewell- Hyde like transformation from noble thane to bloody murderer. While the plot revolves around Macbeth and his notorious actions throughout; the attention is turned numerous times to his wife, Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth is depicted by Shakespeare as an honest, good woman, but as the story moves forward she is proven to be the exact opp osite of the stereotypical woman in the Renaissance era. She is well educated, serves a purpose in the household other than basic that would be condoned as an extreme display of disrespect. Lady Macbeth is different from the average Renaissance woman in the sense that she is nobility. Shakespearean perception of Lady Macbeth creates a loophole in the statement that royalty can rise Pickle 3 above the commoners. However, an entire nation cannot be considered royalty or the title has no meaning. Therefore, the perception that the majority of women had a substantially less successful Renaissance then their male counterparts stands accurate. Renaissance and Reformation QuizExplained in the poetry of the Renaissance, poets such as Christopher Marlowe and Sir Walter Raleigh talk of the full lives they have ahead of them. Within the text, they mention the women they desire and to an extent they assume the women will willingly accept their hand and be happy. While the men are surprised in each incident at the responses they receive, it indicates their opinions towards women in the era, which is that they are superior and that women should Just do as hey wish and say no more. While the tone might seem positive, the peripheral message being sent was that men were superior and it supplements to the fact that women were not as successful or benefiting from the Renaissance. In conclusion, the artistic expression and political challenges show the opinions of women in the period. The literature explains that men were superior and that women were not as able as men were. Women were looked at as second-class citizens through the eyes of poets and playwrights in the era. With the exception of nobility which was a very mall portion of the female population.

Assignment Sample on Impact of Gender Biasness

Question-Identify a research question or research questions based on a topic of your choosing an provide a brief overview of the literature? TOPIC Impact of gender biasness on the attitude of students LITERATURE REVIEW Gender Discrimination is the outcome of tenacious imbalance between men furthermore girls in all circles of life. The measurement and level of oppression girls shows itself in diverse society, legislative issues, race, locale, nations, and economies in an unexpected way. Be that as it may, Gender Discrimination is considered as an enormous stipulation towards the improvement methodology and it is found as a causal element of brutality against girls. Academic Institutions, as one of the essential executors of socialization, have a tremendous effect on the potential classroom accomplishment of students. As examined by Women's Ways of Knowing (1997), the dominant part of sc Academic Institutions has been, and proceeds to be, outlined and run by men. Thus, women's activists have addressed the instructive structure. Additional research (Hall and Sandler, 1982) has uncovered that a number of the distinctions that boys and girls involvement in school are influenced by sex inclined educating procedures, giving boys favorable element over girls in the classroom. Theorists keep up that a student's personality is regularly affected by the sex parts and desires he/she encounters in the classroom; this is particularly valid for girls (Sadker and Sadker, 1994). The teenage years are perceived as an especially turbulent and compelling time for students (Williams and Mcgee, 1991, p.325). Therefore, it is basic that teachers or educators, and the public equivalent, perceive the harming effects that customary role of genders and desires have had for some students, both boys and girls. Gender Biasness can affect students' demeanor towards learning and their engagement with the subject. On the off chance that influenced by Gender Discrimination inclination, young girls will have a tendency to accept that any achievement they have is because of diligent work as opposed to any inborn ability or insights. Young men may be urged to accept that accomplishment in science and math ought to come effortlessly to them due to their sexual orientation. A few boys report dropping out of school science and math programs in light of the fact that they probably won't see these subjects as simple. In general, educators have lower desires for young girls' scholastic achievement contrasted with young men and their state of mind are demonstrated through the sort and nature of the student educator communication. The sort and nature of scrutinize educators give their students can likewise have an effect. Educators' remarks on young girls' work concentrates on its appearance yet with youn g men's work instructors concentrate on the substance. Young girls regularly don't get substantive remarks or feedback from instructors from which they could enhance their capacity to learn. Amid the numerous hours used in classrooms, young girls get less time and consideration from instructors than their male companions. Educators normally ask young girls less demanding inquiries than they ask young men. Regularly, young girls get fewer chances to participate in classroom talk, use supplies and attest their insight in classrooms (Scantlebury, 2011). According to Wood (2009), both males and females progress in the environment which affirms and promotes their behaving, communication and thinking styles. However, by giving more value to the problem solving and visual-spatial skills, the learning styles is mainly associated with the males in the society instead of females. Thus the males groom themselves more confidently and comfortably than females in the present educational environment. Sadker and Sadker(1994) says that the schools which engage in the gender biasness practices encourage wealthy opportunities for boys and restrict the future advancement of the girls. Thus existence of gender biasness in the academic institutions greatly encourages damage to the students occupational choices, self-esteem, attitude, performance, self-concept etc. Thus it is very much important to reduce gender biasness in the academic institutions. Therefore, Gender equality has become the current subject among various policy makers of the world to e nhance the economic growth and maintain the development process of the world. This gender equality concept from the school days itself would help to reduced the perceived barriers among and boys and girls and also eliminate all discriminating forms against girls. RESEARCH QUESTIONS The research questions for the conducting the current research are: Identify the students definition of gender discrimination Analyze the impact of gender biasness on students METHODOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES The sociological theories in sociology are the statements of why and how the facts related to social world are interrelated (Sanderson, 2005). Some of the sociologists say that the structure of sociology is methodological perspective instead of ontological claim. There exists two types of perspective in sociological researches one is positivistic perspective and another perspective is the social constructionist perspective. Positivism methodology is based on the natural sciences and also social views. The information gathered is mainly derived from the sensory experiences, mathematical and logical treatments. The verifying and the obtained data are thus considered as empirical evidence and thus assume that there exists valid knowledge. Positivism mainly asserts that the social structure determines the emotions through the outcome of status relations and power of actors involved. On the other hand the social constructivists reject the significance of physiological and biological subst rate in determining the emotions of the actors. They believe that emotions are mainly determined by the feeling rules or the social norms. According to the social constructivism research the truth and the knowledge is constructed and thus believes that the gender, sexuality and race are social constructed (Kemper, 1981). For conducting this present research, the researcher will use the positivism research methodology perspective. This is because the researcher decides to focus on quantitative data to address the above mentioned research questions and positivism approach is more reliable as it is more scientific. Even Positivism approach follows a proper structure during discussion and studies which allows little space for drastic change in the variable and thus makes the research study more reliable and accurate (Kirby, 2000). METHODOLOGICAL ASSUMPTIONS The ontological assumptions mainly focus on various phenomena that are surrounding the world. It is the theory that mainly emphasizes with the existing issues and revolves around the nature of reality. It refers to different claim which a specific paradigm develops about truth and reality. In short, ontological assumptions are about what is present, its look, and the components that are involved and also the interaction between all the components. The ontological assumptions mainly investigate the characteristics of the commonsensical perceptual and physical world, whether the truth is an entity that is mentally constructed, or identifies the characteristics of the human beings that colonize the world, and whether there exists any relationship among human beings are hidden and need significant inquiry (Delanty and Strydom, 2003). According to Wiersma (2000), epistemology assumptions investigates the truthfulness, possibility, limits, methods, structure of knowledge and how this knowledge can be applied, validates and acquired. Walker and Evers (1988), says that epistemology mainly emphasizes on how researcher can understand the phenomena. Thus the epistemology investigates on the knowledge sources, how to gain the knowledge of world, what kind of empirical evidence is required, identifying the presuppositions of the knowledge, communicate the knowledge to the individuals, issues with validating the truth (Delanty and Strydom, 2003). The current research will follow the epistemology assumptions as it would help the researcher to explain the interaction between the variables in quantitative terms, cause outcomes and shape the events. The assumptions that is made for this current research is that there exists a rigid sex role stereotypes for femininity and masculinity. The gender biasness can occur when people around start making various assumptions about the preferences, abilities and behavior of a girl and a boy in the school. Thus the students find some mismatch among their peers and teachers and thus encounter social problems. REFERENCES Delanty, G. and Strydom, P. (2003). Philosophies of social science. Florence,Italy Essays - Renaissance Painters, Giftedness

Florence,Italy Florence is located in central Italy. Florence was built on both sides of the Arno River, which causes flooding from time to time. Florence has many hills there hills which cause a very changeable type of climate with the help of the Arno River. Summers are hot and humid, and winters cool and wet. There are many advantages to having the city where it is at. The city was about 145 miles northwest of Rome, which is an important city to trade with. The Arno river gives Italy easy access to water and trade from the river to the Meditarian sea. The hills of the city offered some protection from outside invasions. Florence started out in 59 B.C. as a colony for soldiers for the Roman armies . In the 3rd century Florence became a provincial capital of the Roman Empire and a prosperous commercial center. In the medieval centuries, Florence was occupied by outsiders, first by Ostrogoths in the 5th century, then by Byzantines in the 6th century, and then by the Langobards. From the late 10th century onward Florence prospered, and, under the rule of Countess Matilda of Tuscany (1069-1115) In 1293 Florence adopted a constitution that required frequent changes of office to make sure that no group or individual could take over it(once every two months) During the 12th and 13th century the political as well as economic powers grew. Florentine woolen cloth industry and of banking grew. Since there was a balance between the leading merchant families, Florence was ruled by its guilds, which were divided into seven major guilds and a number of minor ones. The city's podesta, or chief magistrate and police chief, could be selected only from the major guilds. Right before the middle of the 14th century, Florence had become a metropolis of about 90,000 people, which made it one of the great cities in Europe (with Paris, Venice, Milan, and Naples). But, in 1348 the Black Death struck, killing half the people. And also the bankruptcies of the Bardi and the Peruzzi a couple of years before the Black Death had also brought down the city, and it never fully recovered from these disasters. Successful merchants and bankers, such as Cosimo de' Medici and Giovanni Rucellai in the 15th century, were able to reshape politics and culture in Florence. The French Medicis, which was an Italian family that ruled Florence from 1434 to 1737, (except from 1494 till 1512 and from 1527 till 1530). they had four popes (Leo X, Clement VII, Pius IV, and Leon XI) and married the royal families of Europe. There are many great universities and academies in Florence, such as The Crusca Academy, which is an Italian literary academy founded in Florence in 1582 to study Tuscan, which was the literary language of the Italian Renaissance. The Platonic Academy, started out as a group of scholars in mid-15th-century Florence who met under the leadership of Platonic philosophy Marsilio Ficino to study and discuss philosophy and the classics. And also the University of Florence dates founded around 1859. There were also many great people (artists, inventors, scientists....) that came out of Florence. One of them was Leonardo da Vinci, he was a great artist, yet was so more then just an artist, he was a painter, sculptor, architect, scientist, inventor, designer, and engineer. Among Leonardo's most famous paintings were The Mona Lisa, and The Last Supper. He made many accurate drawings and sketches of human organs. Another famous person from Florence was Michelangelo who is considered to be the greatest living artist in his lifetime and now he is one of the greatest artists of all times. A lot of his paintings, sculptures, and architecture are among the most famous in existence. He thought of himself primarily as a sculptor. He is famous for painting the Sistine Chapel and doing David. Florence was at this time regarded as the leading center of art, producing the best painters and sculptors in Europe, and there was great competition among artists The city was, however, less able than before to offer large commissions, and Florentine artists, such as Leonardo da Vinci and Leonardo's teacher, Verrocchio, had moved away for better opportunities in different cities.

Themes essays

Themes essays The novel, The Joy Luck Club, written by Amy Tan is divided into many vignettes that each treat a different topic and theme. Every flash back or story of each character has s a different theme, however, there are three themes that appear constantly in the story. Most of these themes are shown by most of the characters in the novel. Sometimes for some it was really obvious, while on the other hand for others it was not. The first theme that appeared constantly throughout the novel was sacrifice. Sacrifice was mainly shown by An-Meis mother whose name was Nuyer. The way she sacrificed herself was that she killed herself to give her daughter a stronger spirit. When the poison broke into her body, she whispered to me that she would rather kill her own weak spirit so she could give me a stronger one. (Tan, pg.271) In this example it shows the great sacrifice her mother did for her daughter. Another sacrifice shown is when Nuyer cuts her own flesh to save her mother popo from dying. An example of this is, My mother took her flesh and put in the soup. She cooked . . . to try to cure her mother this one last time. (Tan, pg.41) In the example given it is shown how a daughter is willing to do anything for their mother just as in the last example where the mother is willing to anything for her daughter. These types of sacrifices were seen along through the novel in between the mothers and daughters. Howeve r, sacrifice was not the only theme seen throughout the novel. The second most important theme is lack of communication. This theme can be seen two times in one single vignette. One way it is seen is the mother has no-good communication with her husband for the reason that they do not understand each others languages well as seen in the following example, My father who spoke only a few canned Chinese expressions, insisted my mother learn English. So with him, she spoke in moods and ...

Rawls thinking Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Rawls thinking - Essay Example This kind of utopianism is not especially useful in the international scheme. Utopianism is unrealistic. It supposes that a perfect world can be created by men and that is one of our goals on Earth. E. H. Carr, for example, is a realist: he believes the world is not perfectible and that efforts to do so will end in failure and sometime calamity (Copleston, 99). The political system contains too many variables for any person or group to control. The League of Nations is a good example of this. The problems of the world are not the creation of any one person or group and so they cannot be tackled head on. Utopianism is a dead end and Rawls version of it is also a dead end. In a sense Rawls opinion of international relations is a continuation of Rousseaus (Rawls, 224). To fully understand this with must go back more than 200 years into the past. The Enlightenment was a remarkable time in human history. For many years, humans had lived in an intellectual or cultural â€Å"dark ages† where very little changed and people were wedded to their superstitions. Centuries went by and nothing really progressed. Instead of testing the world around them they simply accepted what clergymen or monarchs told them was true and left it at that. They didn’t test their limits; they just read old books and believed the facts in them. But this state of affairs could not last forever. There is an impulse, a curiosity, in humans that seeks sensible explanations. In the 17th century the Enlightenment began. Motivated by trade, the printing press, and a number of very significant intellectual leaders, this period of history saw a lot of the superstitions that gui ded people’s lives beaten back. Thinkers like Diderot, Voltaire, Adam Smith, and Thomas Jefferson revolutionized the way we think about the world and our place in it (Sahakian, 87). Scientific innovation was also telling us more and more about our world, was

Article Rebuttal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 2

Article Rebuttal - Essay Example The politics of same-sex marriage is deeper than a mere proclamation. There are numerous fault lines that are built due to the cultural issues in the American politics (Rimmerman & Wilcox 2007). The gay rights law has expanded over the years increasing the members of the community to become large enough to fight for a separate seat in elections. What has really compelled opponents of the same-sex marriage is the focus that gay marriage has received in the state court through their efforts. The community has managed to sponsor its case through major litigating groups such as the â€Å"Lamdba Legal in New York, GLAD in Boston and NCLR in San Francisco†. In the absence of these national groups the ACLU Gay and Lesbian Rights project gets involved (Rimmerman & Wilcox 2007). It is for this reason that the focus on same-sex marriage has increased in the recent years. Bronner states that the opponents are frequently requested to accept the gay marriage as part of the American culture to an extent that even Presifent Obama agreed to accept the new addition in the most welcoming manner. Mr. Blankenhorn, however, is not concerned with the ethics and morality of the act itself. He believes that the same-sex marriage is the major cause in the decline in general marriage patterns in the society. He lays stress on the institution of marriage as being a healthy and significant part of the society. He is merely using the language of morality when he speaks of marriage and indirectly, despite his denial, is addressing the religious or biblical justification for going against the same-sex marriage (Bronner 2012). Mr. Blankenhorn indeed is giving the most unfortunate acceptance for the gay-marriage. But what the author seems to overlook is the fact that the situation is not as simple as it may seem to be (Bronner 2012). The whole idea of marriage has largely evolved in recent years because of the pressure that the
